It’s been a while since I got a chance to update my blog since the PVC figure sale posts, first of all I would like to thank everyone who participated in the sale event. Now, those of you who are following me on other social media stream like twitter and tumblr probably knew that I started an ambitious room renovation project, over half of the furniture that were shown in my OTACOOL room post and Culture Japan TV (in cooperation with Dannychoo) are getting replaced (with most of the funding being drawn from the figure sale! That’s like killing 2 birds with 1 stone!).

This huge renovation effort actually started from a casual conversation with twitter comrades yunamon and cyberchaos when we were chatting about the subject of custom printed dakimakura; and before I knew it, I came upon an online shop that only does dakimakura, but also bed sheet and duvet cover! I got so excited after conversing with the shop owner and decided to print something I have always wanted! And if I were going to modernize my room with this fancy duvet cover, I better upgrade my furniture along with it… so that’s how it all started…. Today, I am going to share with you a sneak preview of my room renovation and my first custom printed project featuring Tony Taka’s illustration Kotone Ousaka! I don’t know how to explain it but I had an overwhelming desire to make my bed properly when I woke up this morning LOL.

I personally own this Kotone Ousaka figure and the Tony Taka Collect 1 which featured this illustration, but there is no other merchandise featuring this absolutely gorgeous illustration… so when I heard there is a way to print this large scale, it took only seconds to decide on this!

This is the package it came in with~

This is what it looks like when folded up~

To give you a sense of scale… their standard duvet cover measures 135cm x 200cm, a little on the small side for North American dimensions but I was about to fit my comforter in it just fine.

And it looks absolutely huge compare to my lovely Saber Lily Dollfie! Guess what I am going to print next huh

Here is a closeup image, their printing resolution is 72 dpi but when blown up this massive scale their print quality is still absolutely top notch and can easily rival official printed product! And you can bet I had a pleasant dream last night! Originally, I was going to print a bed sheet but the shop owner told me that the Japanese standard bed sheet 145cm X 200cm doesn’t fit well with North American mattress (which is a true statement cause the North American spring mattresses are much thicker unless you are sleeping on foam mattress), he recommended me to print duvet cover instead which is an excellent idea!

Now I have just shown you the top side, the naughty side is of course NSFW and only for registered user only~

Please Login or Register to read the rest of this content.

After checking out their excellent print quality on custom printed product, the plan now is to replace all the wall decoration I have right now with custom printing!

Have you ever wondered about printing your own specialized dakimakura/bed sheet/duvet cover? Have you been waiting for that special 2D girl to be printed large scale so you can decorate/itaize your room with but could not find any official product to buy? Well look no further because you can print whatever you want now as long as you have the image with proper resolution! For more information, you can visit the shop Hobby Heart.

For the past year or so, I have been considering an upgrade to my existing Nikon D5000 since I believe I am at the point where I am approaching the limit on what I can do with the D5000. While my original intention was to upgrade to the next full frame release that was due to be announced this year (the rumored Nikon D800), but due to various reasons including Tohoku earthquake in March and the flooding in Thailand in July, the “rumored announcement” has been pushed back. After some careful consideration, I have concluded my best option right now was to acquire the readily available D7000 since I have already located a buyer to off load my D5000 to, the incremental cost to for upgrade from D5000 to D7000 wouldn’t be that much; coincidentally, Nikon has been running a rebate promotion with their line of popular DSLRs, which made the decision to upgrade that much easier.

Since I was in the mood to upgrade due the fact that I wasn’t interested in any of the Dollfie Dream that are being release in Dolpa 26, I decided to go all out and get the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom Lens and the Nikon R1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System as well~ Here I have Saber Lily Dollfie to help me introduce the new camera gear~

I am going to split the introduction into several posts~ first, let’s us take a look at the D7000~

The D7000 is considered as one of the best value cameras out there with the price tag, packing a brand new 16.2 MP sensor that is very similar to the one used in the Sony Alpha SLT-A55 and incredible low light performance that my D5000 can never achieve. I never regretted getting the D5000 when I did because it enabled to learn the capability and the limitation of the camera as my skill level improved. I now understand exactly why I want to upgrade and what I want to upgrade to.

There is an LCD display near the shutter that give me quick update on the status and current setting of the camera~ so I don’t have the hit the info button every time I want to check what setting the camera is at.

It took me a little time to get used to the new menu on the D7000 but once I got used to it, it’s definitely an enhancement from the D5000, not to mention the 39 points AF, which is vastly superior than what I had to work with before~

I am very delighted to be able to adjust the white balance and ISO setting on the fly without having to stumble thru the mention every time I want to make an adjustment.

But of course, the D7000 also have liveview as with most modern digital camera…. what is this I am looking at???

Me: Ohhh, it’s Saber Lily XD silly me~

Saber Lily: Otousannnnnn~ don’t just keep talking about the camera, what about me?

Me: Ahhh… yes yes, I was going to take a couple of photos with you and the new camera yes?

Saber Lily: Otousan~ when are you going to start using the new camera?

Me: Well, I was going to wait until the holiday season when I have enough time to study it further since I have been busy with work for the past couple of weeks, plus I haven’t finish releasing all the photos I have taken with the D5000 yet… like I haven’t even introduced Sakuya yet. I promise I will catch up in the Thanksgiving holiday weekend!

Saber Lily: ….

Me: Ahhhh, did you know I have just bought new dresses for you in the November Dress event? Those should arrive next week!

Saber Lily: Really?!! I love you~ otousan~ /kisses /hugs

Me: (Crisis averted =.=;)

All jokes aside… I really need to get on with doing post processing on some of the photos I have taken in the past few months… I hope I will be able to catch up within the next couple of week or so~ and of course, to formally introduce my youngest Dollfie Dream daughter Sakuya Izayoi~

I have been cutting down on physical media in recent years because they just take up way too much space…. but I have made an exception for these bluray edition boxes since each volume would come with a bonus life size cloth of each of the Fortune Arterial heroines, which I have briefly mentioned in my last Fortune Arterial TV Anime synopsis. Today we are going to take a look at one of these life size cloth… of my favorite daughter Kiriha of course XD

Opened the package and we have 3 boxes, one of the Bluray disc itself, a CD drama disc and finally the bonus item, which is the real reason why I really bought these bluray edition boxes to begin with XD

Isn’t Kiriha just simply gorgeous in her slip , the fabric itself isn’t anything to write home about, it is meant to be a bonus item after all… since they have never released a dakimakura for Kiriha, this is basically the next best thing I can get for Kiriha :s

Here is a close up view of the printing quality itself, once again, nothing to write home about but it’s Kiriha’s face that count for me Similar Posts:

Now that the Worldcup is finally over, I can get back on track to more regular posting . Hurray for Spain and Hurray for Pulpo Paul for the accurate prediction of the final result! I am starting have an idea of wanting a Octopus Plush for my Dollfie Dream daughters now XD. Anyway, back on topic, I know It’s been a few days since I came back from Anime Expo and I am finally gotten around to write the loot post, which, in all honesty, not very big ^^; However, there are a few note worthy items that might warrant a mention, so here we have Dollfie Dream DD娃娃 紅瀬桐葉 to help me show case the loots from this LA trip

I didn’t spend as much time in the exhibit hall as I could, perhaps it was due to my Dollfie Dream loving habit and another reason was the fact that carrying all the camera gear, tripod etc kind of took my attention away from shopping. For those of you who are familiar with other other video magazine post Dengeki Moeho – Otona no Moeho Video Overview [NSFW], you can expect a similar treatment for the Tony Works and Mobile Suit Girl Art Book in the coming future.

I actually passed up the opportunity to buy the Tony Works Ciel Chronicle back at Acen 2010, not exactly a huge lost but who doesn’t want to have more Tony Works in their collection? I have always been fond of Mobile Suit Girl, as soon as I spotted it in the Kino store, it was an instant get for me. And when it comes down to the MediaMix Game Magzine, those big letter stating Fortune Arterial to be animated were enough to perk my interest.

Now, I don’t think I need much explanation for why I ended up getting this Anna bedsheet now do I? He is My Master + Yuri = Instant Win.

And I have already talked about Lightning Warrior Raidy II and Moero Downhill Night 2 in detail in my last post on Anime Expo 2010 JAST USA Bishoujo Game Panel [NSFW]. The Blaze Blue Calamity Trigger PS3 version was on sale at the Aksys store for $20 bucks so why not, plus the girls in Blaze Blue looks quite hot

The next two items didn’t technically come from Anime Expo but were loots from part of the trip when I visited Volks USA for the first time. And obviously, my most pampered daughter Kiriha got to try everything first hand and here she is ready for model for us~

And here is a close up shot on the glasses, a bit big but it’s actually the smaller size already…

I have always wanted a pair of DD Glasses but didn’t know how they would look since it’s not cheap, I ended up getting a pair anyway so I will keep it in mind for future possibilities.

That’s it for now, I got to get busy to play Lightning Warrior Raidy II and Moero Downhill Night 2 before the next photo shoot~Similar Posts:

I have been waiting for the White Album PS3 game for quite some time now, the premium edition I ordered a few months ago has finally arrived. I was hoping for DD Rina 緒方理奈 to arrive about the same time but since Volks International has announced that they have once again pushed back the delivery date for White Album DD to July 7th for international customer, I guess this will have to do. Along side with White Album PS3, there are some other exciting loots that arrived today, let’s take a look at them!

Here I have my loot inspection assistant Feena along with her sisters Kiriha, Rin and Estel to help me with loot inspection~ ( I have a feeling they are just having fun at the back instead of helping Feena out ^^;)

White Album PS3 Limited Edition

Dell Inspiron 11z with Intel SU4100 processor

Nikon 50mm f/1.4G AF-S Nikkor Prime Lens

Flashpoint rechargeable battery designed for Nikon EN-EL9 (Very cheap)

Eye-Fi Pro X2 8GB SDHC Class 6

Regular visitors here probably already know that I am a huge Ogata Rina 緒方理奈 fan and that whole reason why I am interested in the White Album PS3 game to begin with is to play the Rina arc properly with full HD resolution since I wasn’t quite satisfy with graphic quality of the original game was released over 10 years ago.

PS3 Screen Shot

PS3 Screen Shot

Original PC version screen shot

The graphic quality improvement over the past 10 years or so is definitely very visible here!

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vfz6t85IBW8

Let’s take a look what’s inside the premium box~

Since I pre-order the game ahead of time, I also received the pre-order bonus here.

This PS3 Game introduced a new heroine named Sayoko Kisaragi along the original Ogata Rina and Morikawa Yuki.

Nice mini posters!

Inside the box is the game, White Album original sound track and the White Album Illustration Book. And based on looking over the content inside the illustration book, I can tell the basic storyline of this game is going to be very close to the original game instead of the storyline of the White Album anime.

Next up is my new Dell Inspiron 11z, which is only meant to satisfy my computing need on the road since I gave my old notebook to my brother some time ago.

This Dell 11z is powered by the CULV line of duo core processor @1.3GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 800Mhz FSB.

The next item on the list is my new prime glass Nikon 50mm f/1.4G AF-S Nikkor Lens. I have been shooting pictures with the zoom glass for some time now on the 18-105mm and I have started to noticed the limitation on picture clarity with it. So I guess it’s about time to step up to the next level and get my first prime lens. Here are some comparison shots~

This first picture is taken with my Nikon 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR ED Nikkor Lens

The next picture is take with my new prime glass

So far I am quite happy with the improved sharpness and color reproduction of the new glass :3

The last item, the Eye-Fi Pro X 2 8GB SDHC Class 6 is something I have been dreaming about for some time, some of you might have heard about it before. But for those of you who hasn’t, this little SD card can turn your ordinary camera into a Wi-Fi enable camera! It can transfer photo directly from your camera to your computer via a Wi-Fi hotspot, and in some selection model, it can even transfer directly to your laptop without a wireless router! I have long dream of having the ability to wirelessly transfer photo data from my camera (I even thought about making something similar to this myself at one point), especially useful for Dollfie Dream Photography. Why does it matter? Because I believe every camera position, especially for Dollfie Dream Photography, that every pose and corresponding head position is unique for any given frame, and therefore, not easily reproducible. Have you ever taken some photo of your DD and only realize you didn’t quite get the head positioned the way you wanted? This will solve that problem! Since you can monitor your progress on full screen as you go! I can see this becoming especially useful for my next outdoor photography session!

There are several versions of Eye-Fi SD cards, all of them have the option of uploading your photo to your selected photo sharing service as well, how convenient!

Another cool feature that come with this card is called the Endless Memory, the moment your photo is confirmed to be uploaded to your computer or photo sharing service, the file is automatically erased from your SD card; so you will never have to worry about running out of space on your SD card again! From all the review I have read so far indicate that this is the real deal, it works just the way they advertise it. For those of you who actually care about the way your photo turn out, this is something you should not overlook! Almost every major camera brand support this feature!

Oh before I forget, Volks USA has uploaded some of my recent pictures to their Sumika Times Blog, be sure to go check them out ^^;

For your convenience, I have included some product links here~

And that’s about it for now, I got to start packing up for Anime Expo 2010! For those of you heading out to AX 2010, see you out there!Similar Posts:

Shortly after I shot the video tour of my room submission for Danny’s upcoming TV show Culture Japan. I came to realize the lack of auto-focus feature on the Nikon D5000 is seriously annoying when I try to shoot anything with variable focal lengths (like a video tour of my room), looking at the wallscrolls and dakimakura on one end of the room… and trying to zoom in my figure collection. After some serious consideration, I have finally decided to get myself a Sony Handycam, something I have been considering for some time (little did I know I ended up ordering on the 25th Anniversary of Sony Handycam!). I logged on to my SonyRewards website and clicked Redeem ….. 50k Sony Reward Points for the Sony HDR-CX150 16GB High Definition Handycam Camcorder, one of the entry level HD Camcorders. The folks at Sony Rewards did an amazing job in getting this new toy out to me in 2 days! And here I have my daughters introducing my new video gear! Now it’s time to film the video tour again in the long Memorial Day Weekend!

It turned out to be a lot smaller than I expected and very light weight!

More under the cut~

Here is a size comparison against my Nikon D5000.

Obviously, now that I have acquired this video camera huhuhuhu, first to try it out on my Dollfie Dream Daughters!

At first I was having trouble navigating, where is the up and down button? Then I realize… almost everything is touch screen now, duh…. you still need external button for many things but to navigate through the menu selection in the CX150, everything is touch screen.

There are external buttons for W and T which are for zooming in and out, the toggle button for movie and still photo and start/stop button as well.

And obviously, now that I have acquired a video camcorder, the one thing I absolutely must do …. is of course …. an upskirt video of my daughters! XD

Just kidding!

Anyway, now that I have acquired a real video camcorder, and the 5 minutes HD recording limitation on the D5000 is gone, it’s inevitable that I would have wanted to re-shoot the video footage of my room!

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oaqd-PWVSVk

And I have also done a short segment of the video focusing entirely on my main display cabinet as well~

www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8cI3FqCzkk

And as a special feature, I have also shot a separate video footage of my “secret display cabinet” that I have rarely shown to anyone. All of my erotic figures are stored there!

*Warning* Extreme NSFW figure collection, if you are not into ecchi figures, don’t bother clicking the link

Fine tuning white balance setting for indoor Dollfie Dream Photography with Nikon D5000, Nikon Camera Control Pro and Cowboy Studio Light Umbrella set

Thank you for those who has taken the time to provide some valuable feedback to me regarding the Hikari Photo Studio upgrade (in reality, just an exercise to fine tune my Nikon D5000 12.3 MP DX Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR Lens and 2.7-inch Vari-angle LCD for indoor photography by using the Nikon Camera Control Pro 2 Software Full Version for Nikon DSLR Cameras along with my Cowboy Studio light umbrella set) , special thanks to figure.fm comrades Otaku Dan, Rochefort Schubaltz, Tequila and Koshiko for providing valuable opinions for me to improve my Hikari Photo Studio. I spent the better part of today making various adjustments based on those feedback and I’m back to report the progress I have made so far! For comparison sake, most of these shots feature my lovely daughters in nearly identical pose throughout (it’s difficult to get them back into the same pose if I were to move them just for the sake of moving them around >.>;;;). Though I did try to spice things up here and there! Anyway, enough of talking, let’s get to the shots!

So I started off with the Day white fluorescent since it has the 79% lead from the survey yesterday at figure.fm.

More information regarding the indoor lighting studio can be found in my previous blog post here

Indoor Light Photography for Dollfie Dream Setup

While it may be slightly better than the auto white balance, but the tint of amber/yellow is bothering me somewhat so I know I have to do something to get rid of that yellow tint….

So I went into Camera Control Pro to try to fine tune some white balance settings so I can maximize the ability of my Nikon D5000

There are many types of white balances to choose from, fluorescent alone have many types, Day white fluorescent, Daylight fluorescent, Cool-white fluorescent, even sodium and mercury types are also available… after taking a few more shots with various standard type fluorescent settings, I decided to go with Cool-white fluorescent fine tuned to A6, G1. And here is the result:

A6 G1

And a little recap on what I cover the other day~

“Another new upgrade I should like to discuss is the software I began using recently, Camera Control Pro 2 by Nikon. It’s a really neat software that allow me to control my D5000 from the comfort of my desk! I have always dream of being able to see the picture at full scale while taking the shot, but now it’s no longer a dream!”

The pictures are instantly sent to my computer via the mini-usb connection so I can look at the picture at full scale right at the comfort of my desk. This feature has helped me tremendously, especially for Dollfie Photography, where a slight turn of the head can make a world of difference in the shot.

Here are some screen shots of the control

Anyway, After I took some lunch break, I noticed there was a box of unusual looking cake in the kitchen….

It’s the snowy mooncakes that I heard so much about!  I wasted little time and grabbed them for my daughters >.>;

Daughters are very careful with the sweet stuff so they only picked one bag for themselves!

Strawberry princess sounds good yea?

So after we had some cake I noticed a few other figures/plushes wanted to get in on the photo shoot…

Dilbert! You not suppose to get lucky with my daughters!

Dogbert make his appearances! Perhaps he will take part in the Dollfie Dream Theater after all! Hmmm…

Kagami wanted to mimic her bigger sisters and gave us a panchira shot of her own… perhaps someday she would be as lovely as my other dollfie daughters.

Revoltech Rin, Mini Revoltech Auska and Escalayer all came out to join the fun!

And after figure.fm member Koshiko pointed out that the background may be too busy and distracting, so I decided to give a few additional backgrounds a spin and see how it turn out. It can’t be a Hikari Photo Studio if it can’t henshin right?

Ok! The time to retire my Sony Cybershot DSC-F707 has finally come. Especially after my trip to Japan, the limitation of the 128MB memory was painfully obvious. While I think I somehow managed to take a few “decent shot” with this camera,

I somehow did this shot without a Tripod, was a decent result I think

I did this shot by putting the camera on a bench table and angled the lenses up, fairly unique feature of the F707

there were just not enough memory to store images. I wasn’t too happy with the quality and clarity of the images either. So the time to make the jump has finally come. I have been studying a few DSLRs recently and I was drawn to the Nikon D3000 initially because Nikon is advertising their new camera as entry level and amateur friendly and the price is quite cheap too! Amazon currently sell their default kit Nikon D3000 with the 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom lenses for $599.95, and the Nikon D40 with Kit lens has seen a price reduction and had gone down to $481. I know any self respecting camera otaku wouldn’t even touch the kit lenses but the pricing is sure pretty cheap! But upon further research, I have stumbled upon the Nikon D5000, the main draw for me to consider the D5000 is the vari-angle LCD screen. I am sure at least some of you are already familiar with my interest in taking ground level Dollfie Dream pantsu shot such as below, the vari-angle LCD screen will sure come in handy for such an application!

But something held me back to buy the camera before my vacation… it was known as the SDS symptom of the Nikon D5000. Apparently, there was some production issues associated with the D5000 and majority of the cameras sold on the streets had to be recalled to the Nikon facility for repair, Amazon even pulled all of the D5000 out of their inventory. And in earlier this month, Nikon issued another recall for their European customers for another preventative maintenance procedure. While this recall has certainly dampened my spirit to purchase the camera outright, but the words on the streets right now is the channel is getting cleaned up now and Amazon began offering the D5000 again. The following list is the list of camera I have been considering.

I have heard a lot of good things about the D90 and how it is a superior and better build quality camera, etc. But considering I am still a newbie to DSLR, I don’t think I need to make the jump toward the high end entry level DSLR just yet. And I got to mention again, I love taking ground level pantsu shots!

So with the camera selection almost out of the way (I would love to hear any feedback on my selection though!), I got to think about lenses. I have been reading up on prime, macro and zoom lenses for the past couple of days and I am honestly not sure what I need immediately. My main goal is to take pictures of my Dollfie Dream and do figure review. I have very little distance to work with indoor (my room is pretty cramped!). So the shorter the minimum focus distance, the better it is for me. The two lenses I am considering right now are these two:

The AF-S DX Nikkor 18-105mm f3.5-5.6G ED VR (5.8X)

And the AF-S Micro Nikkor 60mm f2.8G ED

Since my application for this camera is rather narrow (at least for now anyway), namely to take photos of my Dollfie Dream and do figure review, am I better off to get the 18-105mm lenses first or get the Micro lenses? I really don’t mind getting up close to my Dollfie to take close up shots but I am a bit worried about getting too close may cause other problems outdoor such as having my own shadow casted over my dollfie when I am taking close up shots. Any opinion would be greatly appreciated!Similar Posts:

In response to Danny’s call for our imaging equipment, I thought I would ride the bandwagon again and try to seek some advise from the camera otaku lurking in figure.fm.

I am actually a little embarrassed to show my “imaging armory” (more like an aging niche weapon!). But since I have just gone outside to take some photos for my dollfie daughters, I have discovered a major pit fall and “some” advantage with my current setup and would like to take this chance to seek some advise from some camera otaku here!

So here is my setup, ~ 8 years old 5 megapixels Sony DSC-F707, with a Sony VCL-M3358 close up lens and a no name wide angle lens. The camera come equipped with
Carl Zeiss
f/2.0-2.4 to f/8
38-190mm equiv.

It’s not anywhere close to a DSLR but I have always found it to be sufficient over the years since I have been doing indoor shooting most of the time and have access to my computer to download the pictures when I run out of space…. since this camera is so old, it’s only compatible with first generation memory stick as shown in picture (a whopping 128 MB!), my only memory stick of that generation, it’s capable of storing 99 pictures at 2560X1920 resolution with standard quality…. I am guessing most of you already realized what my problem is… without the luxury of a netbook or a notebook computer (I gave up my aging P4 notebook to my brother some months ago, now I wish I would just take it back!) with me, I am a sitting duck once I used up my 99 shots >.>; I would still be fine normally since when would I need to used up all 99 shots anyway, but I am so wrong.

As I begin to discover, the near infinite possibility of Dollfie Photography, it not some scenery (where it stay still) or people (you can take them to look at your camera). A slight turn of the head would make a world of difference in Dollfie Photography, so I had to resort into taking many shots of the same pose and hope I would at least get one or two shots with the correct angle. May be I am just not skillful enough but compounding with the space limitation, it’s a huge problem for me.

However, I still believe this camera is fairly decent for what’s it’s capable of doing, it’s just that space limitation and the thought of investing on a new “whopping” 128MB or 256MB memory stick isn’t very appealing to me.

And this is one of the shots I took over the weekend…

I think the quality of the lens is still decent even though the camera is close to 8 years old.

This camera also has a rather unique feature, which is the ability to tilt the LCD preview screen.

Like this.

I never thought much of it except for occasional convenience, but as I discovered over the weekend, this tilt feature can also offer a major advantage…. which is direct view “Pantsu shots”

I never thought the tilt feature would come into play like this but it was really great!

So here is my dilemma, while I still think the camera is fairly decent, the space limitation is killing me and preventing me from enjoying my day out with my Dollfie daughters. What do you all camera otaku think? Should I stick with this camera and get more aging first generation memory stick (which can be rather expensive since they don’t make much of them anymore), or get a netbook to allow me to preview the image while I am on the go? Or bite the bullet and get myself a new DSLR with the ability to equip higher capacity memory media?

Any opinion would be greatly appreciated!Similar Posts:

Today, I would like to bring you another edition of Otaku Project, which is more or less a continuation of the last project Ikea Dioder Cable Management. During the last project, I decided to finally clean up the wiring mess that has been hiding behind my entertainment center for better part of one year; and by the end of the project, I was able to clean up that whole mess and organized it into a manageable form, mission accomplished! However, the victory was short lived, I soon realized that I really wanted more than 6 outlets to be controlled by one outlet strip so I decided to stop by HomeDepot to shop for a new outlet strip. As I was browsing through the whole selection of outlet strips, big and small, something really caught my attention. The Belkin Conserve Surge Protector with Remote Switch.

About 30 years ago, there was this product called X10, which is an industry standard for communication among electronic devices for home automation, such as turning outlet on and off, lightning control, status request on the appliances etc. Perhaps the product was before it’s time, it never really took off like it’s supposed to. Fast forward 30 years, we are in the middle of a recession and the rising cost of energy has become the talk of the town again. A whole new array of energy conserving products has popped up in the market and this Belkin Conserve Surge Protector with Remote Switch is one of them. So, without getting into too much details, the biggest selling point of this surge protector is the added ability to use a remote control to easily turn on and off portions of the outlet to help conserve power. The particular model I picked up consist of 2 always on and 6 switchable power outlets. So, why did I get it? Besides the feel good factor of trying to help conserve energy and bring the cost of the electricity bill down, it’s the ability to turn on/off all the Ikea Dioder with a flick of a switch without even getting up from my desk XD.

So, this is what it looks like after I installed everything:

It doesn’t look as nice as the old black outlet strip but I can deal with it since I can control it remotely now XD. There is also dip switch in the outlet and the remote unit to allow you to adjust how many outlet strips you can control with one remote.

And this is the switch

Before I turn on the switch

With one flick of a switch… see that little green led under my thumb?

And everything turned on!

This outlet strip run me about $40.00 at HomeDepot, a little bit on the pricey end of the spectrum. Then I found out today that Amazon.com has a rebate program going on for it which can bring the price down to a little over $29 with free shipping. Personally, I think it’s a brilliant deal since most decent surge protector would run close to $20 without any form power conserve function or remote control for that matter. With an extra $10, you get the remote switch and the feel good factor of trying to conserve energy (I have no idea how much electricity cost I can save at this point), I think it’s well worth it for the coolness factor alone There are quite a few smart outlet strips out in the market now, like the one made by Smart Strip, but this particular Belkin unit seem best suited for my application since all 7 sets of my Ikea Dioder are all “dumb” electronics and there is no way to control them remotely otherwise.Similar Posts:
