Thank you for those who has taken the time to provide some valuable feedback to me regarding the Hikari Photo Studio upgrade (in reality, just an exercise to fine tune my Nikon D5000 12.3 MP DX Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR Lens and 2.7-inch Vari-angle LCD for indoor photography by using the Nikon Camera Control Pro 2 Software Full Version for Nikon DSLR Cameras
along with my Cowboy Studio light umbrella set) , special thanks to figure.fm comrades Otaku Dan, Rochefort Schubaltz, Tequila and Koshiko for providing valuable opinions for me to improve my Hikari Photo Studio. I spent the better part of today making various adjustments based on those feedback and I’m back to report the progress I have made so far! For comparison sake, most of these shots feature my lovely daughters in nearly identical pose throughout (it’s difficult to get them back into the same pose if I were to move them just for the sake of moving them around >.>;;;). Though I did try to spice things up here and there! Anyway, enough of talking, let’s get to the shots!
So I started off with the Day white fluorescent since it has the 79% lead from the survey yesterday at figure.fm.
More information regarding the indoor lighting studio can be found in my previous blog post here
Indoor Light Photography for Dollfie Dream Setup
While it may be slightly better than the auto white balance, but the tint of amber/yellow is bothering me somewhat so I know I have to do something to get rid of that yellow tint….
So I went into Camera Control Pro to try to fine tune some white balance settings so I can maximize the ability of my Nikon D5000
There are many types of white balances to choose from, fluorescent alone have many types, Day white fluorescent, Daylight fluorescent, Cool-white fluorescent, even sodium and mercury types are also available… after taking a few more shots with various standard type fluorescent settings, I decided to go with Cool-white fluorescent fine tuned to A6, G1. And here is the result:
And a little recap on what I cover the other day~
“Another new upgrade I should like to discuss is the software I began using recently, Camera Control Pro 2 by Nikon. It’s a really neat software that allow me to control my D5000 from the comfort of my desk! I have always dream of being able to see the picture at full scale while taking the shot, but now it’s no longer a dream!”
The pictures are instantly sent to my computer via the mini-usb connection so I can look at the picture at full scale right at the comfort of my desk. This feature has helped me tremendously, especially for Dollfie Photography, where a slight turn of the head can make a world of difference in the shot.
Here are some screen shots of the control
Anyway, After I took some lunch break, I noticed there was a box of unusual looking cake in the kitchen….
It’s the snowy mooncakes that I heard so much about! I wasted little time and grabbed them for my daughters >.>;
Daughters are very careful with the sweet stuff so they only picked one bag for themselves!
Strawberry princess sounds good yea?
So after we had some cake I noticed a few other figures/plushes wanted to get in on the photo shoot…
Dilbert! You not suppose to get lucky with my daughters!
Dogbert make his appearances! Perhaps he will take part in the Dollfie Dream Theater after all! Hmmm…
Kagami wanted to mimic her bigger sisters and gave us a panchira shot of her own… perhaps someday she would be as lovely as my other dollfie daughters.
Revoltech Rin, Mini Revoltech Auska and Escalayer all came out to join the fun!
And after figure.fm member Koshiko pointed out that the background may be too busy and distracting, so I decided to give a few additional backgrounds a spin and see how it turn out. It can’t be a Hikari Photo Studio if it can’t henshin right?

I know I still have room to improve my indoor photos, please feel free to leave any comments and suggestions ![]()

looks like tequila already talked to you about diffraction causing drop off in IQ at higher f stops so i think you’re good on that…
as you well know i am no pro, but for what it’s worth – depending on what you’re going for, you might want to open up that aperture even more to purposely drop things out of focus. having the entire pic in focus can be distracting and less pleasing at times. that said i’m not sure what good group photo technique would dictate… but definitely will depend a lot on your setup. in case you want to get all precise, here’s a nice dof calculator so you can check what your aperture setting should be giving you: http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html
i agree with koshiko about the bg… although would spin it a bit differently perhaps – just because it’s distracting doesn’t mean you have to go solid color. if you can, ideally you could put some distance between your daughters and the bg, open up the aperture, and increase focal length — all of those things should help drop the bg out of focus and give you some nice artistic bokeh. from your setup pic it seemed like you might be short on space but if you can, give it a try!
new lights are looking good! congrats again on a nice purchase ^^

Hey meronpan! Thank you for your detailed response~ much appreciated! I am a real noob when it comes to photography, and didn’t know the side effect of higher f stops…. some of my better photo did come from F5.6 or so like this one.
I don’t plan to make a living off taking photographs myself since I know it’s not really my talent, all I really wanted is to bring my level up to a point where I can take decent photos of my dollfie and figures. I would be rather embarrassed to have taken a bunch of photos just to have someone pointing out that I suck at taking photos! I have been rather pleased with the result I achieved outdoor on some of the single portrait so far but there is a limitation on how often I can go outside and how many daughters I could bring with me, and even change of clothes for that matter. I am a big fan of group photos lol and all these exercises are meant to feed into a big group photos with all of my daughters together! The latest shot was group of 8 and I was quite pleased with the result!
Aye, I don’t have a lot of space to work with, my camera is about 4 feet away from my daughters at most so everything will be in focus for the most part. I use the bottom shelves as more of a stage so daughters are no more than a few inches away from the background but I have some furniture coming soon that can help with that so it will happen in due time. The pure color bg are just a bunch of construction paper I have around the house so it was more of a convenience thing to give them a spin!
Omigosh, the red background looks stunning~! And I’ll agree with Meronpan, leaving some distance in between the backdrop and the subject [your lovely daughters in this case] helps too, the shadows behind your daughters won’t be as prominent.
I’ve found some gorgeous ‘gift paper’ in asian stationary shops over here, locally and in the city, maybe find one close to you? They’re generally in little rolls in a box in the shops I’ve been to, for about $2 each. I’ve got a few with very cute stars or hearts and such which would suit any cute female doll or figure.
Thank you for stopping by. I am continuously try to improve my setup, am doing that still
